Routers and Router Bits for a Skid Foundation Workshop Shed

Routers are used to cut decorative shapes, make grooves and to trim laminate. A router is a high speed power tool that uses bits to perform a wide variety of cutting and shaping tasks. There are two types of routers available the standard router and the plunge router. They are extremely versatile and important tools to have in your skid foundation workshop shed.

The standard router is easiest to use when mounted on a router table and is good for edging work.

The plunge router has a spring loaded base that allows you to position the bit above the work-piece and plunge it into an exact spot. The plunge router is particularly suited to making mortise and dado cuts.

Routers run at high speeds from 800 rpm up to 30,000 rpm and range in size from 1/3 horsepower to 3 horsepower. Most routers available today have Variable Speed motors and have five or six speeds to choose from. For general purpose routing a 1 1/3 hp router is recommended.  A conveniently placed on/off switch, a clear plastic chip guard and a built in work light are other features to look for.

Maintaining the router is a fairly simple task.  You will want to make sure that if the tool comes equipped with a vacuum attachment that the hole stays clear of any chips that will impede the vacuum for doing its' job. To prevent the motor from overheating keep the air vents clear and keep saw dust out of the machine as it will catch fire from the motor brushes. You will want to keep an eye on the motor brushes as well particularly if the machine is used a lot.

A few common router bits are:

• A corner rounding bit which cuts simple finish edges on furniture and mouldings
• An ogee bit which cut traditional decorative shapes in wood.
• A rabbit bit makes step cut edges which are used for woodworking joints and picture frame mouldings.
• A laminate trimmer bit cuts a finished edge on plastic laminate installation.
• A straight bit cuts a square, flat-bottomed groove and is used to make woodworking joints and for freehand routing.
• A veining bit is a round bottomed cutter used for freehand decorative carving and lettering.

There are a number of manufacturers of quality routers. Routers and bits can be purchased in any tool store or hardware type store that sells tools.

Can a wood router, with suitable bit and jig, remove a layer of rust from my cast iron drill press table?

The important thing is that the drill press table remain absolutely flat, so I envisage a jig using two parallel steel bars, which support the router, and between which the router can also move from side to side to cover the entire surface. What type of bit/cutter is required for a router with an 8mm collet. THANKS!!!!

Would'nt use a router as a way to "mill" the table surface .
Have an unheated garage workshop & rust is a problem.
I use a sanding disc w/ scotchbrite pads instead of paper.
They do not "cut" the metal & just scrub surface rust off.
Been doing it for years & no problem w/ keeping tool surfaces true.
I use them dry & then coat the cast table surfaces w/ pastewax to protect the raw metal between uses.
Found it to be better than coating w/ oil or silicone spray .
