what is the difference in a plunge router And a fixed base router for woodworking?

With a fixed-base router, you can set the bit depth by adjusting the base, but then the base is locked into place about the router motor. With a plunge base, the motor is attached with spring-loaded guide rods such that the depth can be quickly changed and then locked into place. My plunge router has an indexing stop that will create stops at various depths, which would be useful if you were routing out a deep hole that you couldn't do all at once.

Plunge bases can also be useful when used in a router table. Many of them are designed such that the amount the router bit protrudes above the table can be adjusted from above the table.

If I was buying a router and didn't already have one, I'd buy a kit with both a fixed and plunge base.
