fill in gap between fireplace mantle and wall about 1 inch thich?

I have a gap between my fireplace mantle and wall about 1 inch thick. The mantle is flush against the wall for the most part except two places. Would Joint compound work or do I need to plaster? There is no backing so I also have to find something to hold the compound / plaster in place.

If it is wood, you could use a piece of quarter round and it would add character as well.
