Considering Buying An Auto Battery Charger

If you’re considering buying an auto battery charger, you’re on the road to making a great purchase. People depend on their cars more than ever and if you’ve ever tried to start a car with a dead battery, you know how important it is to be armed with a device such as an auto battery charger. The feeling of worrying about how you’re going to arrive at your destination would be quickly tempered by the knowledge that you own a device that could help you be on your way within a matters of minutes; even under the worst conditions.

The manufacturers of auto battery chargers are offering many improved styles and it’s easy to find one that will fit your needs. Many chargers can be used not only to charge your car but for campers, boats and other recreational vehicles as well.

Some car owners dispose of what they think are dead batteries, but the battery actually has at least half of its life left. Disposing of these batteries isn’t eco-friendly or economical.  An auto battery charger that is a newer model and that has an intelligent charging system will let you know how much life your car battery still has and can even lengthen its life. Some styles even have a sleep mode that keeps the battery charger quiet.

If you choose to purchase an auto battery charger that doesn’t have as many “bells and whistles” it will work just as well, but not as quickly or as quietly. It can take two or more hours to charge your car battery and usually a blinking light will let you know when the battery is fully charged. Some brands don’t have an automatic shut off so you’ll need to watch it carefully.  Many auto battery charger models have a trickle charger function that will feed your battery slowly at a self-discharge rate. A battery can be left indefinitely in a trickle charger. This is good to use during cold weather.

Is a 15 minute or 1 hour battery charger as good as it sounds?

I mean, it sounds a little too good to actually work right. There are 15 minute and 1 hour chargers, and then there are the regular chargers that take 6 - 9 hours to charge the batteries. A 15 minute or 1 hour charger seems too good. Is it?

Also, there are a few different brands, included a few more generic ones. I've seen Energizer, Duracell, Kodak, and another brand of battery or two. Are they different, or basically the same?

If it makes a difference, the batteries will mainly be used in a digital camera.

They do work as advertised. I don't think that a 15-min charge will bring them up to full, but will certainly give you enough charge to get going -- especially if you are already late for your trip I usually have a spare set of rechargeable batteries so I can use one while charging the other if necessary.

Be sure to get the NiMH type because they don't have the "memory" effect like NiCad batteries do. I don't know about differences between brands, but since you are using them in cameras which need high currect drain (for quick bursts like flash), you'll want batteries that are rated for a high mAh value. Usual for an AA battery is 1700-1800 mAh, high is around 2500 mAh.
