The quick beginners guide to setting your wireless router's security features

If you are a person that is comfortable around computers, then setting the security around your system is not such a big deal. You know everything that you will need to so that you are able to keep your system safe from both online and physical attacks. Anything that you do not know already, you can look up and follow the instructions pretty easily.

This is not the case when it comes to the majority of the people who own computers out there. They use the computer for little more than internet surfing and using the Microsoft Office products. They do not know how to set all of the security that they will need to keep their system safe. They barely had the expertise to install the internet. This is the person that we are targeting when it comes to this guide.

We are here to introduce you to the different ways that you can set the security of your router so that no one will be able to get passed it. Each person's router is different so we will not be router specific. You can either look at the manual or go online to find out exactly how to do something that we described in the article.

So let's get started.

When you are opening up the router for the first time, the first security measure that you should think about is the login and password of the router itself. If you have just plugged it in, you will notice that they have already given you that information. This is called the default username and password. You can use these to login to the router for the first time to make changes. But once you login for that first time, you are going to want to change this information.

It is very dangerous to keep the default username and password on your router. Anyone will be able to get into your router and make changes since that data is public.

So after we have change the router login information, we now want to protect the router itself from physical attacks. A physical attack means someone who is close to your home being able to get onto your router and surf the internet or get inside of your computer. To stop that from happening you must set the router to have an encryption layer on top of it. You will see this in your administration panel in the form of WEP, WPA, and WPA II.

These are the encryption methods that your router can use. For the best protection, you will want to pick WPA II and make sure that you have a good passkey. The passkey should be a phrase and not a word. If possible, it should also be mixed in with non dictionary words. The combinations of the two will make it almost impossible to crack.

Now that you have the encryption for the router taken care of, you will want to focus on the security that protects the router and your computer from online intruders. To do this you must set up the firewall on your router.

The firewall will allow you to stop anyone from being able to get on your system through the internet. Firewalls are fairly easy to set up on most routers and it is mainly a matter of turning them on.

how 2 use a wireless router between a laptop n a patch panel with ISP to connect anova laptop usin wifi?

I live in halls at uni and the internet in my flat mates’ room connects to his laptop with a cat5 cable from a patch panel connection in the wall! Can I use a wireless router and attach it between his laptop and the wall, therefore creating a LAN, so that I can access the router via the wifi on my laptop! If i could use the ADSL cable slot this would not be a problem but the jack in the wall can obviously only fit a cat5 cable into it! Help appreciated!!

It should work just fine if you're plugging it into an active internet connection. Just make sure to encrypt your router using at least WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) encryption as if there's a lot of people near by or people might hack your laptop!

All a router does is take an internet connection and branch it off wirelessly. So it should work.
