Handyman Tips-Replacing a W.C

You will need to know a little bit about plumbing  before you embark on a project like this

The set up is the same for all cisterns, which means that if you were to take out an old one the new one would fit in the same position using the same soil pipe and water supply fittings, with the exception that the W.C is side fed or bottom fed or the soil pipe is connected to the back ,side or vertically, then you would need to make modifications. The same is also true if you are replacing a high level cistern with a close coupled cistern. Usually the new cistern comes ready fitted with all the internal parts, instructions are included in all W.C’s in case of difficulty.

The first step is to drain down the system, this can be done by tying up the float arm then flush the cistern to remove any remaining water in the cistern.

Undo the water inlet nut to disconnect the water supply from the old cistern. This can either be found at the bottom or the side of the cistern. If there is an overflow pipe the you need to undo this.

The next thing is to undo the nut that holds the cistern to the pan or the pipe  which flushes water into the cistern, this is a large nut located under the main cistern housing    .

The pan connector is then attached to the back of the pan. Attach the cistern to the top of the pan using the rubber donought and the bolts provided. push the whole assembly up against the wall and measure the distance for the new soil pipe connector, you may have to cut the soil pipe shorter in order for the new W.C to fit up against the wall. If the soil pipe needs to be cut the hire a link pipe cutter from the hire shop(you only need this if the soil pipe is made of ceramic) another method is to use an angle grinder to cut through the ceramic. If it is made of plastic then a saw will do the trick.

Push the connector onto the soil pipe and the push the pan onto the connector making sure you do not damage the inner rubber seal otherwise you will have a leak behind the soil pipe connector.

Secure the cistern to the wall using screws and check the whole assembly to make sure it is level, place a spirit level on to of the pan in both directions and the same with the cistern. Connect up the water supply and test for leaks and water level adjustments.

Remember most modern cisterns do not need an external overflow pipe because the overflow goes back into the pan, so the need for a hole in the wall for an overflow pipe is not needed, you will have to fill the hole left buy the old overflow pipe

See the screw on the left right next to the tip of the hose i accidentally loosened it and a litle bit of gas ran out (not all of it) is this good or bad Explane

Just holds the bowl in place. Tighten it back up and it will be fine. If it leaks, order a new bowl gasket.
