Woodworking Basic Edge Shaping Guide

Making multiple copies of the same contoured shape with the router requires the use of a straightedge, a jig, or a template to guide the tool along the edge of a workpiece.

With a template, your router can make quick work of repeating a curved cut in a series of workpieces. The exact procedure you follow depends on the type of bit you are using. With the piloted bit shown below, the cutting edge is below the pilot and the template is clamped atop the workpiece. The pilot will follow the curved edge of the template while the cutters reproduce the
same curve on the workpiece.

When you use a non-piloted bit, attach a template guide to the router base plate. The guide is a metal collar that surrounds the bit shank and protrudes slightly from the bottom of the router's sub-base. With the template secured atop the stock, the guide rides along the edge of the pattern, enabling the bit to shape the workpiece.

Whichever type of bit you use, make the template from durable wood, such as plywood or particleboard. Cut the pattern using a band saw or a saber saw,then carefully sand the edges that will be guiding the router, since any imperfections in the template will be duplicated on the workpiece.

For a non-piloted bit, make the template slightly thicker than the height of the template guide. With a piloted bit, the template should be thick enough to provide an adequate bearing surface for the pilot.

Do face moulding router bits come in 1/4" shanks?

I recently purchased a Ryobi table router, and not really knowing anything about the whole process, bought some bits at the store as well. Well, turns out the collet is 1/4", whereas the shanks are 1/2" thick that I am looking to use. I have looked online and am starting to believe that face moulding bits do not come in 1/4" shanks, although I'm hoping someone else can tell me otherwise.

Also, I'm hoping for the width of the moulding to be around 2" thick (I know, most are 2 1/4"). Does anyone have any suggestions?

Most routers allow the user to change collets, so try looking for a 1/2" collet for your particular router. The manufacturer likely would be able to supply the part. In the long run, it's much better to have two collets (or even more) since it gives you more flexibility and more choices when it comes to buying bits.

As far as 1/4" shanks go, they typically are featured only on bits under about 1" in length, and not on any pattern that requires a deep cut. Here are two molding bit that may match your needs. Models 91811 and 91859 are 1" high:

If a 1/2" collet is not available, one possibility for making a 2" molding with these bits would be to run each piece twice, creating a mirrored image of the first pass. Simply flip your piece over and run the bearing along the same strip of wood used on the first pass. As always, take off a little bit at a time. This is true also of 1/2" shank bits. Your cut will be smoother and you'll save time on sanding.
