Build Your Own Wood Shed - Planning a Wood Shed

A few years ago I decided to build my own wood shed, it turned out a disaster. Don't get me wrong, for a first attempt it was not too bad, a little slapdash maybe, but considering I didn't have a proper set of plans.

No, the problem was I hadn't applied for a building permit and the home owners association wasn't too pleased either. So, within a couple of months I had to take it down again. The result was three wasted weekends and a complete waste of money.

Lesson one: If you are going to build your own wood shed make sure you get proper planning permission and check that you do not contravene any building guidelines. To do this you absolutely need a proper set of plans including a list of materials to be used. This small outlay will more than pay for itself.

A good set of plans will come with a chart showing the size of your wood cuts. If you are not using a DIY shed kit it may be possible to get your wood cut to size at your local timber yard saving you a lot of sawing. If you are cutting your own wood remember the old adage 'measure twice, cut once'.

A good deal of consideration should be given to the positioning of the shed in relation to your house. Don't just throw it up only to find you've blocked out the light from the wife's favourite suntrap!

Make sure that your foundations are sound and give some thought to things such as; will I need electricity, will my shed blend in with the surrounding buildings/landscape. With good planning and a good set of plans building your own shed will be an enjoyable venture providing years of service and may give you the confidence to take on more ambitious projects in the future.

how much would you expect to pay for wood from a saw mill?

i am looking for the cheapest way of putting up a dividing fence in my garden about 6ft high and 15ft wide how much does this cost from a saw mill just looking an estimate thanks.

Some of the smaller saw mills will allow you to purchase small job quantities of rough sawn material. The price will be less than dressed material from a lumber yard, however, you usually do not get to pick and choose the boards you want. Say you wanted 100 six inch wide boards eight feet long, the mill will usually band that much together and you take it home, after making payment of course.

Having no idea at all of what type of lumber you are needing, or even what is available in your undisclosed area, all I can do is give you an example.

I live in central Florida, thus yellow pine and cypress are readily available from mills in the area. A wholesale lot 1,000 bdft of #3 ( to be used to replace my neighbors fence ) 1x4x8' or 1x6x8' yellow pine was about $130.00 two months ago and cypress was about $210.00. 2x4x8' was $38.00 more in pine and $46.00 more in cypress. For #2 framing grade add about $100.00 to the costs.
