Shorting wire leaving it glowing?

I have a ryobi one+ 18Volt battery back and i shorted the leads to see what type of spark i was going to get from it and the wire instantly started glowing from the current being produced. Why is it that this happen with the battery pack and not when you do it with a few nine volts hooked up in series? Thanks!

It's the current or AMPS, you are probably getting the same volts but not the watts.
